The Boys Club of New Zealand modernist painting is a favourite target for multimedia artist Sean Kerr. Viewing minimalist art is usually a strictly hands-off affair. But in the abstractor the viewer is physically implicated in paring it back even further. With bad copies and string interpretations of abstract paintings, Kerr subverts, and playfully inserts himself into, the abstract art tradition. Kerr shoots-up abstract painting to construct something new.
Sean Kerr’s new works series is supported by Creative New Zealand and Massey University.
