Anne Noble: States of Grace

25 May - 11 August 2002 in the Entire Gallery
Long recognised as a major figure in New Zealand photography, Wellington artist Anne Noble has in the last decade come increasingly to the fore as a major mid-career artist, regardless of medium. Drawing together Noble's many major photographic series from the early 1980s to the present, States of Grace is the first full survey exhibition of her work.

Anne Noble's oeuvre spans a wide range of social, ethical and poetic themes from her famous photographic journey up the Wanganui River to the hidden lives of Benedictine nuns, from the deeply moving photo-installation about her father's death to large scale images of her daughter Ruby's mouth full of vividly coloured sweets. Whatever its subject, her photographs constantly find grace and poetry in the quietest and most ordinary of places. For the exhibition at City Gallery Wellington, Noble shows for the first time a video work made during her recent trip to Antarctica.
