Ansel Adams: Classic Images - The Museum Set

1 August - 11 October 1998 in the Entire Gallery
Ansel Adams (1902 - 1984) is one of the great American artists of the 20th century. He devoted his life to capturing the essence of the American wilderness, in photographs which have become icons of the modern era. Pushing technical boundaries and artistic conventions to the limit in the pursuit of his singular vision, Adams revolutionised the art of photography.

The Museum Set is a portfolio of 75 photographs by Ansel Adams. Hand-printed by the artist (and considered by him to be his finest work), only 10 such sets exist in the world. City Gallery Wellington has been selected by the owners of this prestigious body of artwork to be the premier New Zealand venue. The Museum Set contains the classic images which made Ansel Adams an American legend. The awe-inspiring vistas of the Sierra Nevada, the sun-baked geometries of New Mexico, and the keen eye for the rhythmic detail of the natural world which characterises Adams’s work, are included in this authoritative collection.

Ansel Adams is part of a programme of monographic exhibitions by three great photographers - both international and local - which coincides with Fotofest, the major international festival of photography.
