beauty, even: Joanna Margaret Paul 1945-2003

12 December 2004 - 6 March 2005 in the Entire Gallery
beauty, even pays tribute to one of New Zealand’s most prolific and intriguing artists: Joanna Margaret Paul. Organised in partnership with the Sarjeant Gallery in Wanganui; the exhibition commemorates the life and work of this painter, film-maker and poet whose art found beauty in the ordinary details of life.

Paul had strong associations with the Wellington region—as a sometime resident and frequent visitor to the city and the recipient of the Rita Angus Artists Residency in 1993. She was included in The Figured Landscape, an important exhibition of five woman artists at City Gallery Wellington in 1995. Working prolifically across a range of media, Paul’s work was often small in scale and personal in scope, focussed on the environments, objects, and people around her. Subtle and open ended, her work, as she once said, deals with the ‘repositories of life, where it’s lived’.
