Boyd Webb’s work has captured and sustained the interest of curators, critics, collectors and viewers internationally for over 20 years. The wit and ambiguity of his photographic fictions have become Webb’s trademark. The poetic universe conjured by Webb is governed by conditions which are self-perpetuating as well as self-defeating: stasis and migration, growth and decay, life and death. This major retrospective brings the work of Boyd Webb to the attention of New Zealand audiences for the first time since 1981.
Webb was born and raised in New Zealand, but he has lived in England since 1972. He has represented both Britain and New Zealand in numerous exhibitions, Biennial events and artists’ projects. He has gained an international reputation and audience of which both New Zealand and Britain can be proud. Despite his significance, Boyd Webb is less widely known in his own country.
