Karin van Roosmalen : Flying at a Slant

30 January - 7 March 2004 in the Hirschfeld Gallery
Karin van Roosmalen’s art reflects her interest in a more mobile lifestyle—in the logistics of moving round and maintaining the amount of stuff necessary to live while resisting the compulsion to amass possessions. Her installation for the Hirschfeld Gallery, Flying at a Slant, looks at this kind of habitation with works that are provisional in nature—wall drawing, components reconfigured from previous shows and works that reference building and tailoring. Van Roosmalen will also respond to the architecture of the gallery, referencing its external surroundings as well as the remnants of the space’s previous life as a bar.

This installation is part of a larger project, in which the artist plans to reconfigure the work in several galleries throughout New Zealand during 2004. Touring the work and adapting it in response to the specific architecture and histories of each space, she will play out her ideas around mobility and transition.

is presented within the 360 programme - a full perspective on Wellington art and design, which is generously sponsored by Designworks. Thanks also to Colourcraft; Publication & Design, Wellington City Council; Creative New Zealand and Massey University.
