Les Cleveland

1 August - 11 October 1998 in the Entire Gallery
Eminent Wellington photographer and popular culture historian Les Cleveland is the subject of a major exhibition of photographs and other relevant cultural artefacts. The exhibition consists of approximately 150 vintage prints and images printed especially for the exhibition from Les Cleveland’s stock of negatives, made within the near fifty year period from 1950 to 1997.

In partnership with GP Print, City Gallery Wellington has published a 128 page book devoted to Cleveland’s work, written by guest curator Lawrence McDonald with Laurence Simmons. Special emphasis will be given to Cleveland’s body of work devoted to documenting people, streetlife and buildings of historic importance in Wellington from the 1950s onwards, and to the images of Westland landscape, industry and architecture made throughout the same broad period. However, images that fall outside these areas will also be included, right up until Cleveland’s most recent set of photographs, made in the American South and Far West in 1997.

Les Cleveland is part of a programme of monographic exhibitions by three great photographers - both international and local - which coincides with Fotofest, the major international festival of photography.
