Peter McIntyre was living in England, where he had studied at the acclaimed Slade School of Art, when the second world war broke out in 1939. After joining a New Zealand battalion, his talent as a painter was soon discovered by General Freyberg who appointed McIntyre to the position of Official War Artist in 1940. Curated from the National Archives collection this exhibition features a selection of McIntyre's war paintings which document the actions of New Zealand troops in Crete, North Africa and Italy.
This exhibition is to commemorate New Zealand VE and VJ day celebrations.
