Vivian Lynn: Spin: Versor, Versari

27 September - 23 November 1997 in the Entire Gallery
Vivian Lynn developed and produced this artist’s project for City Gallery Wellington. It was inspired by a visit to Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, in which one of the rooms is decorated with images of bridal initiation into the Dionysiac cult. Lynn’s work was a variation on self-portrait, consisting of MRI scans of the artist’s brain which formed a frieze around the gallery.

A pioneer of the women’s art movement in this country, Lynn’s art-making has involved a reappraisal of the traditional roles assigned to women. Through her art and her teaching, Lynn has been an inspiration to other women artists in New Zealand for three decades.

This project celebrates Lynn’s achievement and contribution to art-making in New Zealand, while revealing the fluid and dynamic nature of her current practice.
