Contemporary Projects is a series of artist projects of new and recent work by four contemporary New Zealand artists: Eve Armstrong, Darryn George, Sarah Jane Parton and Areta Wilkinson. Curator Sarah Farrar says that although the individual projects are not linked thematically, they have been selected to respond to, and spark off, one another.
Auckland-based artist Eve Armstrong has developed an art practice which utilises commonplace materials and objects and reworks them in formal spatial configurations. Christchurch painter Darryn George combines an interest in formalist abstraction with Māori and Christian symbolism. Areta Wilkinson is an Auckland-based jeweller and artist. Her project at City Gallery Wellington combines recent bodies of work connected by the theme of portability and transition. Sarah Jane Parton is a Wellington-based artist and filmmaker. Her work is part social portrait, part elaborate fiction and manages to be humorous and poignant in its deliberate self-consciousness.
Exhibition and accompanying video programme initiated by City Gallery Wellington and curated by Sarah Farrar.
