Family Day: Drop-In Art Activities for Matariki

6 July 2019

Drop-in art activities to light up your life for Matariki. Gather the whole whānau and join us on the first Saturday of the school holidays for a Family Day inspired by light and the moving-image works in Semiconductor: The Technological Sublime—an exhibition featuring the Sun, the stars, and the Earth’s core.

11am–4pm

Ready, Steady, Glo | Reading Room
Build constructions that glow in the dark under black light using hundreds of straws and connectors. Make an arrangement or a giant sculpture solo or with your friends and whānau.

Blacklight Blueprint | Education Studio
Make your own blueprint using light-sensitive paper and our UV lightbox. Share a photo of your creation on Instagram (#cgwfamilyday).

Night Badges | Reading Room
Draw or collage a badge that glows in the dark inspired by stars, planets, the Sun, comets, and the Milky Way.

Starry Time | Reading Room 12pm and 2pm
Storytelling with Thomas LaHood. Get comfortable in our cosy corner and listen to the legend of Matariki and a collection of stories featuring space.

Light, Camera, Action | Auditorium
Six animated short films from around the world inspired by light, night, and space—including Mr. Night Takes a Day Off by Ignas Meilunas, Raccoon & The Light by Hannah Kim, and Tell Me Not To Worry by Maria Trovatten and Karin Jacobsen. Drop by and watch one or two films, or stay for the half-hour collection. Presented in partnership with Square Eyes Film Foundation.
