Following in the footsteps of the Michael Hirschfeld Gallery’s 2002 architecture exhibition Dreamhouse—which presented architects’ visions for a dream dwelling—In the Neighbourhood looks at new community spaces around Wellington. This exhibition profiles three recent architectural projects: the enhancement of Oriental Bay (Architecture Workshop, Isthmus Group, Tonkin & Taylor), a new building for inner city church St Joseph’s Hato Hohepa (Studio of Pacific Architecture), and the development of a new cultural centre for Waiwhetu (Athfield Architects Ltd). In all of these three projects utopian ideas for public spaces are met with rigorous design principles, creating remarkable new urban landmarks.
In the Neighbourhood is scheduled to coincide with the ‘Urbanism
Down Under’ conference on urban design (18-20 August 2005) and is part of the 2005 New Zealand Year of the Built Environment celebrations.
