Exhibition Specific Education Programmes 2010 Term 1 (until Term 2 week 4)

Colour, Abstraction & Painting Techniques: 1 hour, all ages. Free.
Discover what abstract art is and learn about colour and composition through looking at a selection of paintings by Sèraphine Pick and Milan Mrkusich.

Dance Art Workshop: 1 hour 45 mins, years 9-13. March 9-11th. $10 per student.
Investigate themes in Sèraphine Pick’s art from a dance and movement perspective with Footnote Dancers.

Colour & Abstraction Workshop: 1.5 hours, years 1-8. $3 per student.
Learn about colour by looking at a selection of paintings by Milan Mrkusich and create an abstract artwork of your own.

Sound Art Workshop: 2.5 hours, years 4-8. $7.50 per student. ($10.50 for schools outside Wellington).
Listen and be inspired by Janet Cardiff’s sound installation at City Gallery then go to Capital E’s Soundhouse to compose your own sound track.

Urban Kainga Toi Maori: 1 or 1.5 hours, years 1- 8. Until week 8 Term 1. Free or $3 per student.
Learn about graffiti, animations and slogans (1 hour, free). Choose to also take part in a kowhaiwhai (painting) activity and use stencils to create your own artwork (1.5 hours, $3 per student).

Exhibition Specific Education Programmes 2010 Terms 2 & 3 (Term 2 week 7 – Term 3 week 8)

Painting and Symbols: 1 hour, all ages. Free.
Unravel the signs and symbols in John Pule’s paintings by taking part in gallery based activities and discussions to learn how to read and interpret art and develop your own interpretations.

Painting and Symbols Workshop: 1.5 hours, years 1-8 $3 per student.
Be inspired by the signs and symbols in a selection of John Pule’s paintings and create your own symbolic artwork in the Art Studio.

Dance Art Workshop: 1 hour 45mins, years 6--9 June 1-3rd. $10 per student.
Investigate themes and images in John Pule’s art from a dance and movement perspective, and join Footnote dancers to create dance in response to his work.

Artist-led Sculpture Workshop: 3 hours, years 11-13. 23rd July. $10 per student.
Join artist Lauren Lysaght for this in-depth exploration of her sculptures inspired by Crown Lynn ceramics. Listen to a lecture and gallery talk and then take part in a hands-on sculpture workshop employing some of her making techniques.

Landscape: 1 hour, all ages. Free.
Study a range of artworks in the Wellington City Council collection exhibition, We are Here and There and learn about composition, perspective, viewpoint, and other techniques artists use to create urban and rural landscapes.

MATARIKI PROGRAMME Leilani Kake Toi Māori: 1 or 1.5 hours, years 1-8. Free or $3 per student. Term 2 until week 8.
View Leilani’s film, and learn about the art of tā moko (1 hour, Free). Choose to also take part in a WHAKAIRO (Carving) inspired activity to design your own tā moko mask (1.5 hours, $3 per student).

Hiapo & Cerisse Palalagi Pacific Island art: 1 or 1.5 hours, years 1-8. Free or $3 per student. Term 3 week 1 – week 8.
Learn about customary Hiapo (Niuean bark cloth painting) and see how Cerisse incorporates traditional and contemporary printing techniques in her work (1 hour, Free). Choose to also take part in a printing activity and create your own print (1.5 hours, $3 per student).

Ongoing Education Programmes for all ages

City Gallery Explorer: 1 hour. Visit and explore all of our new galleries and exhibitions at City Gallery and take part in gallery based activities. A great introduction to contemporary art and art galleries for all year levels.

Drawing in the Gallery: 1.5 hours. Be inspired by a selection of artworks at City Gallery, and develop your own creative responses to them while experimenting with different drawing techniques.

Ongoing Education Programmes for specific Year levels

Speaking Pictures: 45 mins, yrs 1-3. Listen to, create and tell stories inspired by artworks at City Gallery Wellington. A great introduction to contemporary art and art galleries for our younger visitors.

Creative and Critical Thinking Skills: 1 hour, yrs 4-8 and 9-10. Take part in activities, discussions and games to develop students’ creative and critical thinking skills in response to a selection of artworks at City Gallery.

Research and Critical Analysis: 1.5 hours, yrs 11-13. Develop students’ critical analysis and research skills by participating in activities and discussions in response to a selection of artworks at City Gallery.

Ongoing Outdoor Education Programmes, Summer terms only

Māori Mythology and Public Sculpture: 1.5 hours, all ages. Find out how Māori legends are told through public sculpture in and around Civic Square and take part in observational and drawing activities inspired by the artworks.

Public Sculpture Trail: 1.5 hours, all ages. Discover different types of public sculpture in and around Civic Square and the waterfront, making drawings and taking part in activities along the way.

All programmes are free with the exception of the Exhibition Specific Workshop Programme which carries a $3 per student materials charge.
