Melvin (Pat) Day.
Sadly, the team at City Gallery acknowledge the loss of another great contemporary New Zealand art figure with the death of Melvin 'Pat' Day CNZM on the weekend, aged 92. Day was a recognised practitioner, whose painting career spanned some 80 years (he started at the tender age of eleven). Day painted in a Cubist style. Some of his paintings can be seen in the exhibition about New Zealand Cubist painting on at Auckland Art Gallery at the moment called Freedom and Structure. In 1984 and 2008, we presented his solo exhibitions, Full Circle and Continuum. Day was also an accomplished arts administrator, serving as director of the National Art Gallery (now Te Papa) for the decade of 1968 – 1978.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family.
