Stanley William (Bill) Toomath, 12 November 1925 – 20 March 2014
It is with considerable sadness that the team at City Gallery learned of the recent passing of Bill Toomath. We have warm memories of his exhibition here in 2010 in the Hirschfeld gallery space called Architect Bill Toomath: Liberating Everyday Life. While the exhibition could only look at a modest number of projects within his considerable output, it did focus on the principles that guided his forty year practice. New Zealanders’ ordinary daily activities were foremost in his mind: the spaces he designed were to enable practical, enjoyable, liveable everyday surroundings. Bill’s practice spanned the entire period of New Zealand modernism, and was distinct in its consistency of approach. Simplicity of form and means remained primary themes.
Bill’s was a welcome voice on panels about architecture held at the Gallery, one that will be missed. Everyone at the Gallery extends its condolences to Bill’s family and friends.
