With its highly publicised political ‘theft’ in June 1997 from the Aniwanawa Visitor’s Centre, Colin McCahon’s Urewera Mural has become one of New Zealand’s most famous as well as significant artworks. This exhibition enables visitors to see this massive painting in the flesh, and to understand something of Te Urewera, the history of the place, its people, and its significance to both Māori and Pākehā.

Denys Watkins stayed at the Heavenly Chance hotel during a visit to Hanoi in 1997. While there, he was inspired by the frequent references to spirituality and light that occur in everyday Vietnamese life. The exhibition Heavenly Chance presents Watkins’ view of this culture. Heavenly Chance is an evocative and mystical experience, and marks an exciting chapter for one of New Zealand’s leading painters.
