Designs on Antarctica is an exhibition of recent work by Wellington ceramic artist Raewyn Atkinson. For this exhibition, Atkinson has created a selection of ceramic objects, cast into the shapes of old cans and featuring scenes of Antarctic history and scenery. Made in response to Atkinson’s trip to Antarctica in 2000 as part of the Artists in Antarctica residency programme, these are not your typical tourist mementoes of the Great Southern Land. Atkinson’s porcelain cans, appearing at once luminous and rusting, are displayed amidst weathered wooden boxes, to recreate the interiors of the huts of Antarctica explorers Shackleton and Scott.
Designs on Antarctica is supported by Creative New Zealand.
