Achievement objectives
Visual Arts: Level 1 -2: Share ideas about how and why art works are made and their purpose value and context. Share ideas feelings and stories communicated by objects and images.
English:Level 1-2: Recognises connections between oral written and visual languages. Uses their own personal experience and world and literacy knowledge to make meaning from texts (and images). Understands that the order and organisation of words, sentences and paragraphs and images contribute to text (and image) meaning. Forms and expresses ideas and information with reasonable clarity often drawing on personal experience and knowledge. Uses oral written and visual language features to create meaning and effect. Organises and sequences ideas and information with some confidence.

Programme content Students will: Use creative thinking and story telling to interpret art works 
Activities may include:

  • Engaging with stories about artworks/inspired by artworks.
  • Responding to artworks by thinking creatively about ways to describe what they can see using ‘what if…’ questions to imagine possible narratives inspired by the artworks.
  • Working individually or in small groups to participate in discussions about artworks and develop stories inspired by them using a puppet or imagined character, employing various aspects of story telling: narrative, beginning middle end, character, description, metaphore, etc.
  • Working in small groups to create a short story about an art work and sharing these stories with the rest of the class, using role play & props to illustrate and act out stories in the gallery.
  • Developing new vocabulary to use in their stories in relation to the artwork and art terms.
