Tiffany Rewa Newrick: Untitled (a conversation with the body)

13 December 2010 - 15 January 2011 in the Square² Gallery

Untitled (a conversation with the body) investigates how objects ‘perform’ in space. An amorphous inflated sculptural form advances gradually down a corridor towards us, then recedes, apparently moving without prompt. In Tiffany Rewa Newrick’s work the object is considered a stand-in for, or prosthetic extension of, the artist’s body: the body in motion is at once the artist’s own, and an abstract marker of time and space.

The plastic form is initially foreboding; suspense builds as it proceeds towards the viewer. As time passes, however, we recognise it as a mundane plastic bag-like construction, with a decidedly handmade finish. It transforms into an unserious object, something slightly absurd, bodily and ungainly. It seems to represent the motion of an absent body, or a route blindly re-traced. Performance becomes repetitive action, or in the words of the artist, ‘performative document’; choreographed act becomes routine action. Translucent and strangely hypnotic, the work continues to operate on a formal level alone, as a mediation on time’s passage.

Tiffany Rewa Newrick graduated from AUT University with a Master of Art and Design in 2009. Newrick has participated in group shows nationally and in 2009 had a solo exhibition at the New Zealand Film Archive, as well as taking part in the video postcards segment of Living Room 09, Auckland. Newrick was also included in the Wintergarden Project as part of The Auckland International Film Festival 2008, curated by the New Zealand Film Archive. Recent projects Newrick has participated in include The Sculpture Season, St Paul St Gallery, Auckland, 2010, curated by Melissa Laing. This year the artist has been involved in the collaborative NZ Accumulation Art Project and an Artist Residency at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
