Education » What's on in term 2
The Obstinate Object is a surprising and varied exhibition of contemporary sculpture that will make a fantastic start to 2012 for Primary, Intermediate and Secondary students. Taking over City Gallery inside and out, spilling out of its windows, walls and doors and into the city beyond, students will be intrigued by the range of sculptures which pop up in unlikely places. This exhibition challenges assumptions of art galleries, display and how we engage with objects, allowing for a hands-on education programme exploring the use of materials in the exhibition and how the sculptures have been made. Key aspects of the programme will involve:
To make the most of your visit, book a tour and workshop where students will work through a range of processes that connect to artworks in the exhibition. Suitable for Y0 – 10 students. $3 per student, 1.5 hours.
Sculpture resource card for all year levels
Alongside our regular education programmes, we're offering a special series of workshops for students with a passion for sculpture. Over three 2.5 hour long sessions, students will investigate sculptures in the The Obstinate Object that have been created using a casting process, learn how to mix plaster safely, make a two part plaster mould, cast an object and produce multiple copies of that same object from coloured glycerine (soap). Class sizes are limited to 10 students. Suitable for Y6–8 students. $5 per student for a series of 3 workshops.
Visit our student gallery to see more images of this workshop in action.
Friday 20 April, 9.30am – 3pm, $45 per teacher (includes materials and a catered lunch). Limited to 10 teachers.
Gallery educators Keila Martin and Waimatao Familton will deliver a workshop for primary and intermediate teachers interested in learning basic casting skills. This will include a tour of the exhibition that explores a range of sculptural processes used by artists in the The Obstinate Object followed by a range of methods for working with plaster to create replicas of objects as well as individual works.
