City Gallery Wellington is closing temporarily to undergo a refurbishment of its foyer and entrance to improve accessibility and enhance the Gallery’s connection with Civic Square. The extensive nature of the work means that the Gallery will close from Monday 20 November 2017 until Friday 2 March 2018. It will reopen on Saturday 3 March 2018 with the exhibition This Is New Zealand.
Visitation to the Gallery has grown over the past five years and City Gallery Director Elizabeth Caldwell says the refurbishments will further enhance the Gallery’s accessibility to these growing audiences:
‘The Gallery exists to provide people with access to exceptional art experiences, but getting in the front door has not been as easy as it could be for anyone with impaired mobility or caregivers with buggies. We’re delighted to be in a position to remedy this.
‘The new entrance will also enhance the Gallery’s connection to Civic Square, reinforcing the Gallery’s role as a civic space and making it more inviting to all visitors.’
Changes to the Gallery foyer and main staircase will also be made during the closure which will further improve accessibility.
Nikau Café and the Gallery Shop will remain open during this period.
The project is funded by Lottery Grants Board Environment and Heritage Committee and Wellington City Council.
