Te Whanganui-a-Tara artist Simon Morris has made site-based paintings in most of Aotearoa’s public galleries. In this video series, we sit down with Simon to unpack his most recent work Walking Drawing as part of the exhibition Room of Time.
Abstract in form and impermanent in nature, this painting exists only for the duration of this exhibition. Simon Morris’s Room of Time is part of an ongoing exploration into the occupation of space through time-based abstract painting. The action of making one brushstroke after the other—all the same but unique—creates an accumulation of forms in a repeating structure that meets the gallery space in the time of the viewer.
Simon Morris: Room of Time on now at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi until February 6 2023.
