Explore exhibitions, develop creative and critical thinking skills, and make connections between art and ideas through hands-on activities in the galleries.
Draw your way through the past of Aotearoa and discover vibrant paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Ayesha Green (Ngāti Kahungunu, Kāi Tahu). Her exhibition Folk Nationalism reclaims colonial narratives by reimaging historical paintings. Taking form through self-portraiture and personal histories, these works position Green within broader narratives as a contemporary Māori woman and as a descendant of cross-cultural relationships. She calls us to ask, what are the stories we tell about our collective past? Are those stories accurate? How can looking at art help us change our questions about and relationship to the histories of Aotearoa?
We’ll give you materials for a follow-up art activity back in the school to create your own giant postcard from the past.
