Our popular Family Day is back for July.
Come to City Gallery Wellington on Matariki Holiday for a day of experiences and encounters. There will be a range of activities and pop-ups happening through the Gallery for you to discover.
Join us for a day of fun and creativity that the whole whānau can get in on.
Taonga Pūoro Performance 11am: Start the day with a short taonga pūoro performance. Go on a journey with our performers, pāpā and ia duo Riki and Kiva and have a chance to get up close with some of the taonga pūoro afterwards.
Whetū Brooch Making (drop-in): Adapting customary Māori patterns and techniques make a piece of art you can wear home. Include a wish to send to Hiwa-i-te-rangi in your weave and carry it with you for the year to come.
Kite making (drop-in): Decorate your own small kite. What colours and designs will you add to make it your own? Take your kite out into Civic Square and see it soar. What can your kite tell you about the winds that Ururangi is setting for the year?
Matariki Film Programme (drop-in): Experience Te Ao Mai Ngā Whatu Māori - the world through a Māori lens with this selection of shorts from Wairoa Māori Film Festival.
Artwork Kōrero 12pm & 3pm: Join one of our talented Gallery Guides as we explore an artwork and spark conversation. Spend time with us to take a slower look and reflect on the wonderful artworks and exhibitions we have on offer.
Storytelling with Moira Waimara 1pm: Nau mai, haere mai! Join storyteller and writer Moira Wairama as she shares a tale for all ages to celebrate the Māori New Year and the return of Matariki.
