Join us on the opening weekend of our latest exhibitions to hear from the artists. Curator Dr Kirsty Baker will be in conversation with Moniek Schrijer on The Jewel Room, followed by Stella Brennan on Ancestor Technologies.
Stella Brennan is an artist, writer and curator based in Tāmaki Makaurau. With an established practice spanning from the handmade to the highly mediated, her work prises open history, its losses and possibilities, interrogating colonialism, industrialisation and computerisation. Brennan has exhibited across Australia, Asia, North America, Europe and New Zealand and has been awarded Residencies including at Apex Arts in New York City, and Artspace in Sydney. Her curatorial projects include Nostalgia for the Future (Artspace, Auckland, 1999) and Dirty Pixels (Artspace, Adam Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Waikato Museum of Art and History, 2002-3). https://stella.net.nz/
Moniek Schrijer is a contemporary jewellery artist from Aotearoa who holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts (2012) and a Post-Graduate Diploma from Whitireia's Facility of Art (2013). Schrijer's practise is characterised by the adaptation and alteration of materials collected largely from second hand and recycled sources. She uses a variety of traditional and unconventional jewellery techniques that allow for her pieces to move between the jewel and the object, the flat plane and the 3rd dimension. Her distinctive work, weaves together wry humour, critical reflexivity and technical originality.
