Wellington artist G. Bridle explores the concept of ‘the Retreat’, an undisclosed imagined site where he can seek seclusion and gain inspiration from the ‘aesthetic spirit’ that appears to him in visions. Photos of a pool of water and a rocky reef represent both a haven from the world and the hidden danger of the wilderness. His owl-candle work, M.L.L. (2007), is made in a dated, folksy style. An earlier work, Brotherly Love (2005), is a bird house in the form of a masonic lodge. ‘The retreat can be any place’, says the artist. ‘Others can join me.’
