Simon Morris’s Room of Time is part of an ongoing exploration into the occupation of space through time-based abstract painting. The action of making one brushstroke after the other—all the same but unique—creates an accumulation of forms in a repeating structure that meets the gallery space in the time of the viewer.
Abstract in form and impermanent in nature, this painting exists only for the duration of this exhibition.
This is the fourth ‘wall work’ Morris has made at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi. Each brushstroke extends what has become a sustained encounter with these spaces that stretches back over twenty-five years, but meets us in the direct experience of a painting encountered in the here and now.
