Australian artist Tracey Moffatt collaborates with Gary Hillberg on collage videos that mash excerpts from the canon of cinema according to common themes.
Love (2003) explores Hollywood conventions for depicting romantic relationships by montaging love scenes. At first, the selected clips are romantic, sweet, enticing, but they crescendo into the violent and frightening. Moffatt writes: ‘Love is a roller-coaster montage of some of my favourite Hollywood melodramas depicting love scenes, which, in the end, turn out to be not so romantic.’
Doomed (2007) compiles destruction scenes from disaster movies—from early silents to recent blockbusters, from sublime films to trashy ones—exposing the grim psychological implications of this ‘entertainment’ genre.
