Seismic assessment

City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi building assessed as earthquake-prone, building continues to be safe to structurally sound and suitable to occupy and operate .

Our people and visitors are our priority, so we are pleased the building is structurally sound and suitable for continued occupation.  The Council has other buildings that carry this kind of notice that remain open to the public.

Our regulator and landlord, Wellington City Council, has issued an earthquake-prone building notice which allows 15 years to plan and carry out remedial work. Council will begin this work in February 2025 along with deferred maintenance work.

We will be leaving home at the end of June 2024, and we are delighted that we will continue to bring art to Wellington at a range of venues around the city over the next two years. We look forward to returning home to a much-improved, seismically safe and future-proofed building in Te Ngākau Civic Square in 2026.

Construction noise

With construction work around Te Matapihi (Central Library), you may notice noise coming from the site.

How to find us
